Crisis Response:
UNITED WAY CRISIS RESPONSE
SPECIAL NEEDS FUND
The
United Way keeps funds set aside for emergencies and
community initiatives. The Special Needs Fund is
available to qualifying agencies to assist in times of
financial crisis or sudden increase in demand for service.
When funds are available, this fund may be used for program
start-up or seed money to qualifying agencies.
Each year, United Way volunteers on the
Allocations and Budget Committees evaluate the current needs
of the partner agencies and the amount of money raised in
the most recent fall campaign. A small portion of the
campaign is set aside for the Special Needs Fund.
EMERGENCY FOOD &
SHELTER
The most
common needs of people in crisis are food, housing and
utility assistance. The United Way allocates a special FEMA
grant every year to several local agencies assisting people
in times of crisis. This grant, called “Emergency Food And
Shelter”, was created by Congress in 1983. Since then, over
$100,000 has been allocated to Putnam County’s crisis
assistance providers, including the Salvation Army,
Community Action Commission, Crime victim Services and local
food pantries.
C.A.N. (CRISIS
ASSISTANCE NETWORK)
The
agencies listed above and several others meet monthly to
network and coordinate the various services available to
Putnam County residents in crisis situations. This group
works to eliminate duplication of services as well as works
to identify gaps in services to the most needy of Putnam
County. |
